The year is 1700. It’s almost dawn, 25 more sailors aboard His Majesty’s ship have taken ill. The journey has been long and treacherous. Many months have passed since the crew of hale and hearty men set sail across the high seas. Now, as the captain looks around him, his men are slowly dying, one by one. Mysterious, irregular patches of re and purple skin cover their weakened bodies. Their gums are swollen and bleeding, and their teeth are falling out…(1). In the past, if a patient suffered from some kind of disease, people used to believe that it resulted from a ghost invading the soul, or bacteria or viruses damaging the body. They never realized that disease could also come from within the body by way of nutritional deficiencies. It wasn’t until the 14th century that doctors began to consider that balanced nutrition was important to keep a body health.
