Vitamin B2--- the Second Water Soluble B Nutrient

In the early 20th century, most nutritionists believed that there were only two unidentified essential nutrients, a fat-soluble A and a water-soluble B vitamin. Soon they found there was a second water-soluble B compound isolated from liver, eggs, mild, and grass, and all of the substances were yellow. In 1933, Dr. L.E. Booher obtained a yellow growth-promoting substance from mild whey, observing that the darker yellow color riboflavin has greater potency, while the yellow coenzyme was found to be essential for the body’s energy needs. Biochemists were eventually able to isolate riboflavin, or vitamin B2. In Vitamine B2 deficiency, there may be cracks, or fissures at the corners of mouth, inflammation and soreness of the lips and a smooth, reddish-purple tongue. The skin becomes greasy, scaly and dry.
