Sunshine Vitamin D and Rickets

Many years ago, children who lived in temperate climates developed the malformed bones and teeth characteristic of rickets. Their chest and spinal column deformity looked similar to a pigeon chest and tortoise back and both legs became “O” or “X” shapes in severe cases. But in tropical areas, most children did not develop the illness. In 1920s, nutritionists started to expose children to sunlight or sunlamps and feed children cod liver oil and food exposed to sunlight. Cod liver oil is rich in vitamin D, and food exposed to sunlight contains vitamin D2. Skin tissue contains the substance, provitamin D, which converts to vitamin D under the sunlight. Cod liver oil is rich in vitamin D and exposed to sunlight food contains vitamin D2, which was converted through photosynthesis. Thus vitamin D is important to help children absorb calcium and phosphorus for the proper growth and development of bones and teeth.
